Joe meets a man – Treacle Walker – who offers him a choice. A rich, deep, deceptively slight blend of folklore, magic, comics, and dreaming. Unlike anything being written by anyone else, this is a fantastic story told with uncompromising simplicity, and up with Garner’s best.
My own books here, if that’s your thing. Newest is noir thriller East of England.
Author and folklorist Garner writes on (mostly) his Cheshire childhood of the 1940s. Splendid child’s-eye approach, without a hint of nostalgia or of adult reminiscence. Hugely recommended, even if you’ve not read Garner’s other work.
